Use project thumbnails gridder with lightbox

Is it somehow possible to use the project or category thumbnail gridder with the lightbox - so when I click on an image the lightbox opens rather than the project page?

Currently Lightbox does not apply to A Category / Thumbnail Grid. These need to be links, so the question would be when are they a link and when are they just an image?

Do you not wish to use the Element Grid? This works with Lightbox and has Project Thumbnails as well as Images, video, text etc.
