Background colour overrides html class or Id

Hi
I'm trying to build a page where I need to layer things on the z axis and I'm using css for that, but when I apply any colour to the page or row as a background, the element with the id applied to it isn't visible anymore.

Any tips around why this is happening and how to fix?
