Custom menu style

Hello everyone.
I'm currently setting up a news portfolio website and I want to create a specific menu style as shown in the picture. does anyone know how to make something like this? would be super appreciated.

at the moment this is only possible using css

i think its a pretty nice design, i will write it down and maybe create some settings for it in the customizer one day!

Maybe you can help me with the css code? I managed to get it to work, but it does not look as clean as the example above.
