Make project thumbnail not clickable

I want my project thumbnail grid to not be clickable - I don't want pages of my projects to be accessible. I've tried css pointer-events but this also removes the hover state which i need. any ideas?

oh yea you could use javascript to prevent clicking

people would still be able to just look at the html code and find the URLs of the projects
